Steward Community Woodland

Woodland Diary - March 2003

The month started with our Tree Planting Weekend. Many volunteers came to help us plant 150 oak saplings in the area we'd cleared over the winter. The weekend was sunny and warm and the trees (along with guards and stakes) were all planted by Sunday lunchtime.
There's now more light coming into the Settlement Area which will be great for sunbathing this summer (and for our solar panels)!

We then moved our attention to the Growing Area, clearing mulch from some beds and preparing them for planting, sorting out irrigation, digging a pond, planting seeds, etc. We spent a day at the Proper Job community composting facility near Chagford, sieving and bagging compost for use in the garden.

Cheryll, Pete, Dan and Merlin made a presentation about the project to sixth formers at Kelly College in Tavistock, which went down well. We're keen to do further presentations at schools in the area and are exploring this.

Following the outbreak of war, Pete and Dan attended a peace rally with 5000 others at the US airbase in Gloucestershire from which B52's are flying to bomb Iraq.

The month ended with a very moving storytelling performance by the Spindle Wayfarers in
Moretonhampstead Parish Hall in aid of Moor Trees, a volunteer group restoring areas of wild native woodland on Dartmoor.
