Steward Community Woodland

Woodland Diary - June 2001

Another very busy month. We opened the woodland walk and held our first course in conjunction with the Small Woods Association.

In relation to the cycle path lease we consulted with the Devon Wildlife Trust and the Devon County Council ecologist to establish best practise for future management of the highly diverse verges of the disused railway track.

Our forth-coming planning appeal has also kept us busy. We’ve had meetings with our solicitor and submitted our business (PDF 144Kb) and management (PDF 146Kb).

The Carlton TV crew returned to take more shots of the wood, this time from a crane! The DNPA held a consultation day in Moretonhampstead to facilitate democratic involvement of the local community in the formation of an updated local plan.

The Proper Job project in nearby Chagford held an open day and some of us went along to see what they have been up to since getting planning permission for their community composting and timber reclaiming and recycling center.

In Moreton we did stalls at the weekly flea market and took part in the Moreton Music Day where Pete played guitar and sang some of his owns songs and the rest of us provided backing vocals. Another local event was the North Tawton Midsummer Sunday Social where we provide pedal power for the band. Some of us did more cycle stuff at the ‘Wheel Thing’ event in Bath. We also provided our renewable energy powered cinema at the first 'low impact forum' of the UK Eco-Village Network, which was held at Tinkers Bubble. While there we got involved in some thatching which was inspiring.

The month ended with a party held to celebrate Dans Birthday.
