Woodland Diary - December 2002

We set up a stall at the North East Dartmoor LETS trading day in Chagford, advertising our various wares and services to the LETS carrying public. The evening was fairly successful, with a few sales, and some interesting purchases at the bric a brac stall. It was a very social event, although stallholders did seem to outnumber punters most of the time. It is a good way to promote local currency, and make it all more tangible, but it was a pity there weren't more attendees.

Continuing in the same vein, we spent a few days making and selling Yule wreaths from holly, ivy, honeysuckle and laurel to gauge the market and get some practice. We sold some at the Moretonhampstead Christmas Fayre, and the rest decorated the Longhouse for the Solstice season.

Work continued felling larch and clearing sycamore stools around the commmunal spaces, in preparation for tree planting, and to clear dangerous trees around our dwellings. We had to take down a few of our adolescent Ash standard trees, as they were infected with canker. A few blew down in the Autumn winds as well, reducing our interim canopy as the new oaks slowly grow underneath. We will use the larch logs for construction and firewood, although there is also the possibility of selling them if people want larch 'in the round'. Towards the end of the month we celebrated solstice with a small party and hot tub.
