Affinity Woodland Workers Diary - December 2001

Lots of work was done on the kitchen. Coppicing and felling in the Autumn provided construction material for an improved frame work which will at some point include an upper platform for storage and occasional sleeping space. We reinstalled the end canvas walls to make it more suitable for the seasonal weather, worked on some of the worse draught problems and also installed some windows. We did a review our winters work schedule and agreed to hold an review of the whole year in January. Ben started to put together his second annual review for the website.

Those of the group who are currently doing a local permaculture course went on a field trip to Chagfords 'Proper Job' community composting and recycling project. Others visited a friend who has a very good example of a small scale hydro electric system from which we learnt a lot of useful stuff. Ben attended a wedding, at a farm based community in East Devon, of two people he met selling home made organic bread at Totnes market.

We enjoyed making a spectacle of ourselves so much at Moretons Cabaret last month that we did a repeat performance at the ToGG Xmas cabaret in Totnes. We also did a private performance for some of the people who came to our winter solstice party. Another feature of the party was hydro powered cinema and our new wood fired hot tub which has been a joy over this chilly part of the winter.

We continued to celebrate the end of the year with a group walk along the Wray Valley; a walk from Fingle Bridge with friends in Moretonand a boxing day gathering at the backpackers. Best of all was the birth of Kat's first child, Kieran. He was born on the 25th December at 5:30am, with Ben, Clare and the father all present at the birth. A nice end to the year.
